American Policy toward Angola since 2002

Research Idea: U.S. policy toward Angola underwent significant changes after 2002, following the end of the Angolan Civil War, which lasted 27 years, from 1975 to 2002. Cooperation between the United States and Angola expanded across the political, economic, and security spheres, while bilateral relations were further strengthened through numerous official meetings between the leaders of the two countries. This development eventually led to Angola becoming a strategic partner of the United States in Southern Africa. U.S. policy toward Angola has been driven by several motives, most notably strategic and economic considerations. At the same time, this policy has been influenced by broader international developments.

Objective: This research aims to trace the evolution of U.S. policy toward Angola after 2002, examine the underlying motivations shaping that policy, and identify major U.S. projects and initiatives in Angola.

Methodology: The research adopts a case study approach, which is widely used in research in the social sciences and humanities.
